Why bother with a blink dog miniature?
While blink dogs aren’t the most common creatures encountered in Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition, they are far from the least commonly encountered either. They have a lot of potential for a creative dungeon master, and even dungeon masters who just follow published material as written will find that they need the miniature occasionally. They are fun Fey creatures, which will often not end as combat encounters, but something far more interesting.
What about this mini?
The unpainted mini which I use is yet another of the WizKids Nolzur’s Marvelous Miniatures line: Blink dogs #72568. Two blink dog minis come in the pack. The other miniature is a blink dog that is halfway through a portal, which seems off to me since they blink from one spot to another, but I quite like the sculpt for this mini, which is why I use it in my games. It is supposed to have a medium sized base, which is has, so I am very happy with this miniature, all things considered.
How useful is this mini, really?
Blink dogs are included in 9 published Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition books:
- Deck Of Many Things
- Eberron: Rising From The Last War
- Ghosts Of Saltmarsh
- Monster Manual
- Mythic Odysseys Of Theros
- Planescape: Adventures In The Multiverse
- Vecna: Eve Of Ruin
- The Wild Beyond The Witchlight
- Xanathar’s Guide To Everything
That is a decent number of books. If you run the published adventures, you will probably want to have one of these on hand, as they do pop up every now and then. If, like me, you are all about homebrew settings, I feel like blink dogs give you a lot of opportunities to have fun with your players.
But why are you doing this?
As usual for these videos, my aim is to provide good views of the miniature and sizing information about it. As I already said, it’s a medium base size and that’s the correct size. Also, as usual I want to thank wildlife artist Sherrie York, leading expert of the reduction linocut, for kindly allowing me to use one of her pieces, Shivano Sunset, as the backdrop for the minis.
