Why bother with a carrion crawler miniature?
Carrion crawlers are one of the oldest and most popular creatures in Dungeons & Dragons, and 5th edition’s carrion crawlers are no exception to that. It’s a safe bet that if you have a carrion crawler miniature, you will have plenty of opportunities to use it. These Monstrosities are one of the bread and butter creatures for lower level groups, terrifying them because of the carrion crawler’s paralyzing tentacle attacks. Plus, they are a giant maggot/grub looking monstrosity, raising all of our revulsions and fears and mixing them up together into a big kettle of D&D nightmare fuel.
What about this mini?
This miniature was made by WizKids as part of their Nolzur’s Marvelous Miniatures range: Carrion crawler #73535 It was provided unpainted, so any dissatisfaction with the paint job is solely down to my poor painting skills. It’s a nice sculpt, and I am happy with it personally. I have a soft spot in my heart for grubs and maggots though, so your mileage may vary.
How useful is this mini, really?
Carrion crawlers are included in these 13 published Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition books:
- Acquisitions Incorporated
- Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus
- Glory Of The Giants
- Icewind Dale: Rime Of The Frostmaiden
- Monster Manual
- Out Of The Abyss
- Quests From The Infinite Staircase
- Tales From The Yawning Portal
- Tomb Of Annihilation
- Volo’s Guide To Monsters
- Waterdeep: Dragon Heist
- Waterdeep: Dungeon Of The Mad Mage
- Xanathar’s Guide To Everything
As you can see, carrion crawlers remain as popular as ever, and a carrion crawler miniature in your collection will get some use.
But why are you doing this?
As usual for these videos, my aim is to provide good views and sizing information. Its size is large, as it is meant to be, so that’s all good. There aren’t a lot of colours on this creature, so it’s not a bad place to start if you’re worried about your painting abilities. Also, as usual I want to thank wildlife artist Sherrie York, the queen of the reduction linocut, for kindly allowing me to use one of her pieces, Shivano Sunset, as the backdrop for the minis.
