Why bother with a yochlol miniature?
Yochlols are not the most widely used Fiends that you will come across, but these demons are likely to get plenty of use in campaigns which include drow, especially drow cities. Yochlols are fiercely loyal to Lolth, which is unusual for demons in general- usually demons are fiercely loyal only to themselves. Yochlols also make excellent spies and secret agents for infiltration, so they could be found in areas away from drow, but where drow interests lie. They may not be the most commonly used miniature, but opportunities abound to use yochlols in your campaigns.
What about this mini?
My yochlol miniature is an unpainted plastic miniature from Wizard of the Coast‘s board game The Legend of Drizzt, like the troll. The sculpts for both miniatures are quite good, coming from a board game, and purchasing the board game for the minis is money well spent. The base size is medium, which is the size that it is supposed to be for a yochlol, so that also makes me happy.
How useful is this mini, really?
Yochlols are included in 7 published Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition books:
- Call Of The Netherdeep
- Monster Manual
- Out Of The Abyss
- Phandelver And Below: The Shattered Obelisk
- Van Richten’s Guide To Ravenloft
- Vecna: Eve Of Ruin
- Waterdeep: Dungeon Of The Mad Mage
This is not a huge number of publications, and if you are only running published campaigns, you probably would be in no rush to purchase a yochlol miniature until you needed to. If you homebrew, yochlols give you opportunities to add a bit of subtle subversion to a political situation in a unique way. It really depends on how much you like to bring drow society into your game, in the end.
But why are you doing this?
As usual for these videos, my aim is to provide good views and sizing information for miniatures so you can see what you’re getting before you purchase them. As I already mentioned, the yochlol’s size is medium, as it is meant to be, so that is excellent. Also, I want to thank wildlife artist Sherrie York, one of the best reduction linocut artists, for graciously allowing me to use one of her pieces, Shivano Sunset, as the backdrop for the minis.
