cat mini which I use in my Dungeons & Dragons 5E games

Focus on a D&D 5E mini: cat

Why bother with a cat miniature?

I mean…it’s a cat. Almost everyone loves cats. Who doesn’t want to take the opportunity to have a cat as a familiar? When you’re a druid and you have to choose a Beast to wild shape into, a cat is always a good choice- they can get into places without issue, and are already well known by the occupants. They make great pets. They are stealthy and small so they go unnoticed. Cats are great, and there are heaps of ways for players to interact with them in Dungeons & Dragons 5E, so it’s a good miniature to have, since they will likely call for one at least occasionally. This mini fits well onto a tiny base, which is the correct size for the cat.

What about this mini?

This miniature, like the ochre jelly baby, pixie, sprite, raven, giant weasel, giant riding lizard, and hezrou miniatures, is a bit problematic. This unpainted metal miniature is from Otherworld Miniatures, a company which I have bought many minis from over the years. It has very recently closed due to the owner’s retirement, so minis are no longer available for purchase from them. However, it has closed so recently that Otherworld Miniature products are still available in retail shops and on the internet. As a result, I’m putting a number of videos of their miniatures up now so if you like the mini(s), you can look around for them before they are all gone. Supposedly they were going to sell their molds to another company, but nothing has been heard on that for months, so it’s anyone’s guess who has the molds or if they will be making more of their minis at this point. If you want one of their minis, this is probably the time to look for them. I have quite a few of their miniatures, because I really like them. This particular one is part of a pack of 6 small creatures, FS15a Lesser familiars (6). There are plenty of other useful animals in this pack like the raven, and it’s the first of the minis from this pack I have showcased but it won’t be the last. I painted this miniature to be a copy of my cat, Freddie, so it has special meaning for me as well.

How useful is this mini, really?

Cats are included in 12 published Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition books:

That is a decent number of books, so if it were just for that, the miniature would be useful. Since cats play such an important role in D&D 5E as familiars, wild shapes, etc., it’s a safe bet that you had better get one because even if you don’t need one, your players will likely ask for one sometimes.

But why are you doing this?

As usual for these videos, my aim is to provide good views of the miniatures featured and sizing information about them. As I already pointed out, the cat miniature is on a tiny size base and that’s the correct size. I would like to also thank the wildlife artist Sherrie York, the greatest reduction linocut artist I know of, for kindly allowing me to use one of her reduction linocuts, Shivano Sunset, as the backdrop for my minis in the video.
